INTRODUCTION

 

JCCAE offers courses by distance learning and by classroom instruction.  JCCAE is an approved (ceu) provider through the Texas State Board of Examiners and the Texas Department of Health for professional counselors, family and marriage therapists and social workers.

 

All courses through the Joint Commission on Chaplain Accreditation and Education have college credit hours included for each course.  If the student wishes to have his hours matriculated, it can be put toward a degree.

 

The Joint Commission on Chaplain Accreditation and Education is also an approved “ceu” provider through the Texas State Board of Examiners and the Texas Department of Health for Licensed Professional Counselors, Family and Marriage Therapists and Social Workers.  Students can earn their yearly “ceu” hours through taking this course.       

 

I.               Course Description

Crisis Counseling is a certification course is a three-credit course that focuses on the basics of Crisis Counseling. It is primarily intended for counseling students and crisis care education.

This is a complete study of Pastoral Crisis Counseling for the Lay or Ordained Chaplain, Pastor or Clergy member who assists in working with persons or communities who have suffered a traumatic situation.  Learn how to counsel using faith based techniques 

II.            Goals and Learning Outcomes

The overall goal of #JC7005 is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize, assess, evaluate, and counsel during the trauma of crisis care, at a faith based level. The measurable learning outcomes used to determine the degree to which this goal is being met follow:

  • Students will describe basics in crisis care.

  • Students will apply recognized skills to counseling during trauma.

  • Students will recognize signs and symptoms of persons(s) in crisis 

  • Students will recognize the concept of trauma for families during crisis

  • Students will apply counseling techniques to victims of trauma

III.         Required Readings

  • Selected course handouts by instructor

IV.    Overall Structure of the Course

The course is designed to provide students with a variety of contexts for understanding and evaluating the process of crisis. Students will be expected to apply all terms and concepts presented in the course to the profession on a daily basis.   

V.      Classroom Course Requirements

Students are required to take this course and participate in discussion, take examinations, and complete any assigned work.  Students are expected to complete any required weekly readings before class, ask questions, and turn in assignments on time.

Homework
Graded homework will be assigned as required. The homework must be turned in the following class session.

Examinations

The test will cover material from the course and should take approximately 1.5 hours to complete. The final exam will be comprehensive and may take the total time allotted for a class session.

 

Distant Learning Requirement

 

Students will take the courses by distant learning or through classroom instruction from a certified JCCAE affiliate.  The test must be taken and sent to the office of JCCAE for grading.  A passing grade of 75% must be met.  Test scores will be recorded and applied to your degree program.

 

Certifications:  JCCAE offers certifications for each specialized subject in Counseling Education. Once the course has been taken by distance learning and the test has been taken and sent to JCCAE and a grade of 75% has been met, the certificate will be mailed to you.  The certificate will have the registration number printed directly on the certificate.       

 

VI.    Course Policies

For classroom instruction, homework will not be accepted after the due date.  Exceptions will only be made in extenuating circumstances and at the discretion of the instructor. 

The examinations must be taken as scheduled on this syllabus and as announced in class.

Students who have disabilities requiring special arrangements for class participation or test administration should notify the instructor of the need for such arrangements at the beginning of the semester.  

Students in this course should be familiar with the policies on Academic Responsibility and violations of academic responsibility in this course will be handled accordingly.  

VII.   Assessment and Grading

Students will be evaluated on assignments and examinations.  The examinations will be objectively scored using a scoring key.  The assignments will be graded on a scale from 0 to 100, reflecting percent of possible points earned.  Grades will be assigned using the following weights:

VIII.  Course Outline

Topics for each class meeting are listed below.  However, circumstances may call for a departure from this schedule. Any changes to the schedule will be made in advance.  Homework assignments will be handed out one week prior to the due date.
